From The Telegraph 10.september 2007. By Gordon Rayner.
'the couple have the clear impression that POrtuguese police not only regard them as the prime suspects, but have no intention of pursuing any other lines of enquiry or actively searching for their daughter.
Their suporters believe the Policia Judicaria have now achieved what they have secretly wanted for weeks, if not months - to get the McCanns out of Poretugal and to place on them the indelible stain of suspicion which will enable them to wind down the case.
....
As Mrs McCann succinctly put it before being named a suspect - ''The police don't want a murder in Pórtugal and all the publicity about them not having paedophile laws here, so they're blaming us.'
I can see why Mrs Mccann talks of murder. That would be a preferable outcome to the grisly truth of paedophile abduction - that the children are kept alive, sometimes for years and finally disposed of, when they are of no further use. they can never be set free.
Portugal's politicians and Police have behaved and are behaving in a despicable manner. The McCanns are the bloody victims for God's sake of the most heartbreaking crime imaginable. It is incomprehnsible to Brits that such barbarity can exist in what we imagine to be a modern law-abiding fellow EU country. If we allow the EU to run Britain's legal system and supervise our Police force as Brown is proposing, I guess the paedophile abductors will take heart that Britain like the rest of Europe will become an easy touch.
REPLY TO COMMENTER - I am having porblems trying to comment on both my blogs as if I'm getting interference from somewhere. Portugal does not have paedophile laws according to The Telegraph in the UK. If the media is being manipulated as you say, there could be a high level pact to make this embarrasssing case go away. As for the DNA, experts have pointed out the problems with using this as primary evidence.
Portugal must endure the shame of these events and its failure to deal with them. No need for any colonies thanks.
and the facts are starting to come out as I suggested - LATEST ON PORTUGUESE POLICE COVER-UP - The official Portuguese police spokesman in the Madeleine McCann case, who resigned last weekend, has told friends he was 'unhappy' and 'exasperated' by leaks to Portuguese media by junior officers involved in the case. He also told a former colleague he was "always worried the evidence against the McCanns was weak". Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa said that the leaks were intended to push Kate and Gerry McCann into confessing they had killed their daughter. Sunday Telegraph 21.9.07. The only question is how far up the chain of command does the cover up go.
How many child killings/gone missing happen each year in Britain? Last year more than 800 as far as I am concerned, and where are your comments on this? Where are your comments about the British Police when they can not solve any of these cases?
Just for the record, Portugal is one of the SAFEST places in the World to live in or to go on a holiday. I would also like to remind you that it was not the Portuguese Police who left the 3 children alone to go to the restaurant, while there was FREE baby-sitting facilities!
The forensic analysis are underway in BIRMINGHAM, one of the BEST forensic labs in the World!
By the way: Portuguese NEVER leave children alone to go to a Restaurant, our family ties are a lot stronger than in Northern Europe! We don't even consider going on a holiday without our children!

Yes Miguel but accusing a mother of killing her own child when you don't even have a body - just to get her out of Portugal is shameful. Let's not hide from what's being done here. It's appalling, and if we are now all to be citizensn of one happy union, not acceptable.

The Portuguese authorities need to do the decent thing and own up - they have messed this whole case up.
Instead, what do they do ? Try to frame the parents of a disappeared child.
MIGUEL - do not lie about the conditions of children (and 'FAMILY TIES') in Portugal. CHILD LABOUR IN PORTUGAL IS WELL DOCUMENTED, FOR EXAMPLE!
See the reference below which suggests 200,000 children working - or at least 30,000 according to the PORTUGUESE GOVERNMENT.
http://www.dol.gov/ilab/media/reports/iclp/sweat/portugal.htm
Portugal is a Stone Age country that does not deserve to be in the EU, when (a) it has at least 30,000 child labourers according to its government, and (b) it cannot even protect children, and then tries to blame the parents.

..good link Mountjoy. it's even more sickening - because Portugal is an EU country the British media prefers to hide the truth than allow Brits to know what a legal nightmare we are embarking on if we sign into the Constitution. EU law is a paedophile's charter.

there is no requirement to prove beyond reasonable doubt to bring a successful prosecution. there is an assumption of guilt once you are charged. police can select who they wish to be the guilty party and the courts go along.
that enables organised crime to infilrate the system and protect paedophiles.
